ANTONIO MONROIG  (1944-2024)

Mr. Monroig, one of the founding partners of Lasa, Monroig & Veve, focused  his practice on government relations.  Mr. Monroig had extensive experience working in the public sector.  He was an Assistant Secretary for the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) during the Reagan Administration.  Mr. Monroig also served as Administrator of Municipal Services and Chairman of the Board of the Solid Waste Management Authority for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and as Special Assistant to the Mayor of San Juan.  He served as General Counsel of the Puerto Rico Cooperative Development Administration, as well as Deputy Director of the San Juan Legal Services.  Mr. Monroig was elected Chairman of the Republican National Hispanic Assembly and served from 1995-1997, and he was appointed Chairman of the White House Task Force on Hispanic Heritage during the Reagan Administration.

Mr. Monroig also had a distinguished career as a political analyst and advisor.  He served as Special Consultant on Latin American issues to the Advisory Committee on Foreign Affairs during Senator Bob Dole’s presidential campaign.   He was  a frequent commentator for national and international radio and television networks on campaigns and political events.  Mr. Monroig had represented U.S. and foreign companies before international organizations and governments.

Mr. Monroig was a member of the Board of Trustees of the James Monroe Memorial Foundation and a member of the Board of Directors of the Virginia Opera.  He also served on the boards of Teatro de la Luna, Washington Performing Arts Society, Festival Casals, Opera Camerata of Washington, and San Juan Municipal Theater. 

Mr. Monroig graduated from the Catholic University of Puerto Rico School of Law (J.D., 1968). He received his undergraduate degree in Political Science from the University of Puerto Rico in 1965. Mr. Monroig was awarded a Senior Managers of Government Certificate by Harvard University in 1978 and a certificate from the Georgetown University Executive International Business Management Program in 1994.  Mr. Monroig was admitted to the Bars of the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Virginia. He was fluent in Spanish, English, and French, and has a basic knowledge of Italian and Portuguese.
